Membership

Yorkville Branch accepts students on an ongoing basis. Beginners are welcome and previous martial arts experience is not necessary. Those with a background in other styles are welcome if they are interested in practicing Shorinji Kempo in its standard form.

Membership is limited to men and women over 18. All members receive personalized instruction in a friendly and non-competitive environment.

New students should have sufficient stamina to participate in 90 minutes of activity. Anyone over 40 or with chronic injuries should consult their physician before joining class.

Expectations

Shorinji Kempo is not a drop-in fitness class. Members study a technical curriculum and consistently attend both weekly classes. Participation in service projects is also expected.

Students must learn a small vocabulary of Japanese terms. Students that train regularly find this manageable even if they do not have a Japanese language background.

Progress in Shorinji Kempo depends mainly on attendance and concentration. Motivated students usually orient themselves in a few weeks, take their first exam in a few months, and test regularly thereafter. Pressure to advance is limited, but complacency is discouraged.

Finally, although strong ties exist between the Shorinji Kempo branches of Ontario and combined events are common, students must choose one branch for membership purposes.
