Branch Info

Eglinton Branch began practicing in 2002 and joined the World Shorinji Kempo Organization in 2003. The branch’s name reflected its original location on Eglinton Avenue. The branch moved to its current Yorkville location in 2005 and renamed itself Yorkville Branch in 2006.

The branch is led by Albert Louie, who has practiced Shorinji Kempo since 1991 and holds a 4th degree black belt. Al has trained at numerous branches worldwide, including Spokane Branch, Alberta Branch, Singapore Branch, and Toronto Branch. He is assisted by 2nd degree black belt Richard Ngun, who did his previous training at Vancouver Branch.

Costs

Members pay the following fees at the beginning of each month:

  • $50 per month for regular members
  • $30 per month for full-time university/college students

After a few sample classes, new students are asked pay a one-time membership fee of $40. Instructors are not paid to teach and all fees go towards rent, equipment, and administration.

A martial arts uniform is not required to begin, but members should invest in a proper uniform after several weeks of classes. Official uniforms may be ordered through the branch for $40.
